10/25/12: District 5 United sponsored an Education-focused Candidates Forum at the Roberto Cruz Alum Rock Library on Thursday, October 25, 2012.

Candidates running for Trustee in Alum Rock, East Side, and Mount Pleasant school districts were invited, as well as candidates for State Senate District 15. Education is a “Hot Button” issue with ballot measures at the state and local level that impact us all. State Senators have a direct vote and impact on the state budget, and School Trustees deal with that impact on a daily basis.

7/30/12 Record Clearance Project: There was a lot of interest after the 7/25/12 District 5 Meeting from people seeking help for others who are having trouble getting a job due to their criminal background. The San José State University (SJSU) Record Clearance Project (RCP) engages undergraduates in assisting eligible people to clear their criminal records. Speed Screening is a great, free way for someone with a criminal background to bring their ‘rap sheet’ or court documents which are then reviewed for eligibility and they can get advised on next steps. It is producing great results for many people in our community. Such a session will be held on August 7th at the Center for Employment Training (CET). Click here to view a flyer. Another session will be held at the Dr. Roberto Cruz Alum Rock library in September or October 2012.
